Russia has granted citizenship to Edward Snowden, the sensational hero of leaking secret information in the history of the United States. In a decree on Monday, Putin granted Snowden citizenship.
In 2013, Snowden leaked files on US National Security Agency (NSA) domestic and international surveillance activities. He fled from the United States after this incident. Russia granted him political asylum.
Snowden once worked as a contractor for the CIA and NSA. Snowden, who possesses exceptional IT skills, caught the illegal activities of the NSA's intelligence surveillance program, secretly copying large amounts of NSA data onto his computer. In 2013, he got in touch with American lawyer and journalist Glenn Greenworld. Greenworld was then writing for the British daily Guardian.
At the time, Snowden was working as an employee of Buzz Allan Hamilton, an American security contractor in Hawaii. The company was an NSA contractor. Snowden decided to hand over a large amount of NSA's 'top secret' information to the Guardian. In June 2013, Glenn Greenworld began writing a series of reports for the Guardian based on the documentary information he provided. The White House erupted in anger as lightning struck American rulers. Edward Snowden became the 'Most Wanted American' by his home country's government. The American government issued an international warning against him.
In recent years, the United States has sought the extradition of Snowden, 39, to face trial on espionage charges.
