Swedish geneticist Savante Paabo has won the Nobel Prize in Medicine. The Nobel authorities decided to award him the prize for his 'discoveries related to the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution'.
The Nobel authorities said, 'We often wonder where we came from, how we are related to those who came before us, how we have become different from other organisms of the same tribe; Swedish geneticist Sovante has researched these issues.
Savante Paabo was born on April 20, 1955, in Stockholm, Sweden. He specializes in evolutionary genetics. He is one of the founders of paleogenetics. Savante worked extensively on the Neanderthal genome. In 1997, he was appointed Director of the Department of Genetics at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany.
