A new law (Criminal Code) has been passed in Indonesia. The act provides for punishment for extramarital sex and cohabitation.

According to the Guardian, the new law will apply to Indonesian citizens and foreigners in the world's largest Muslim-majority country. In addition to this law, insulting the President of Indonesia, insulting state institutions or Indonesia's national ideals (locally known as panichasila) are punishable.

The law was unanimously passed by the country's parliament on Tuesday, Reuters reported. When the law was drafted in September 2019, students across Indonesia protested. Critics say it would erode individual liberties.
