Rebels in Congo accused of killing 272 civilians

272 civilians have been killed in rebel attacks in the People's Republic of Congo (DR Congo). A rebel group carried out the massacre in the eastern city of Kishishe last week.

According to Al Jazeera, in a press briefing on Monday, DR Congo's Minister of Industry, Julien Paluku, announced the new number of civilians killed in the attack by the rebels. He said, I cannot tell the details of the attack. An investigation has been launched by the Attorney General, we await the results.

The Congolese government has blamed the M23 rebel group and its allies for the civilian killings. However, the rebel group denied the allegation and termed it as 'baseless'.

The UN peacekeeping mission in Congo last week condemned the atrocity, saying the killing of civilians, if true, would constitute a "crime" under international human rights law.
